MPC Film delivers extensive photorealistic effects for
a terrifying tale of survival on the ocean floor.

Twentieth Century Fox’s Underwater follows a small crew of deep-sea miners who face more
than the rough surrounding elements as they
fight for their survival in the aftermath of a dev-
astating earthquake. Trapped in a rapidly flood-
ing underwater research facility, the crew of six
realize their only shot at survival lies in walking
across the ocean floor to a distant abandoned rig.
In addition to the physical challenges of the jour-
ney, they quickly discover they’re being hunted
by mythic, monstrous sea predators hell-bent on
killing them. Directed by William Eubank, the
film stars Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, Jessica
Henwick, John Gallagher Jr., Mamoudou Athie,
and T.J. Miller.
Working as the lead visual effects vendor
for Underwater, MPC Film’s VFX supervisor Axel
Bonami led teams in Montreal, London, and Bangalore in completing more than 400 shots. The
teams created the full journey on a dry-for-wet
shoot — from the submerged base to the whole
pipe connecting to the Kepler Station, down to
the ocean floor, through miles of underwater desert and cold dark landscapes, and to the final act
at the main Roebuck station. MPC built all external assets outside of the underwater station.
