and they had the project coming
up. I had a meeting with our director, Scott, and that was it, really. We
got on very well, and the whole idea
of Doctor Strange really interested
me. With all the Marvel franchises,
Strange was always one I really
wanted them to make into a film.
It’s not your classic sort of superhero affair. It very much deals with
other dimensions and magic, and I
thought visually it was very exciting.
What were you first thoughts
when you read the script?
BD: There were huge challenges that
I saw there. A lot of the film is set
in other dimensions, and there are
worlds that have never been seen
before on the cinema screen. It took
a lot of concept work and original
source material research to find a
look for those. When I initially read
the script, I thought, “Wow, this is
great! I have no idea what these
worlds or dimensions look like. Let’s
find out!”
How closely did you work with
director Scott Derrickson during
pre-production?
BD: Very closely. There’s a creative
core group during pre-production,
and on a film like this it involves the
director, production designer, DP,
and visual effects supervisor. All of
those creative people come together
to create the environment and world
of the film.
