KR: We have a very collaborative
team and that comes from the top
down. Jonah Nolan, Lisa Joy, Stephen Semel, and all the other producers are very involved with sound.
They love sound and they love the
mix and they are very in tune to
what we are going for. That goes
for the sound supervision also with
Tom DeGorter and his sound editors.
It’s really a team effort. We feel like
a family because we spend so much
time together. We are all out for the
same goal, to really make the best
sounding show that we can. Scott
and I both love working with Jonah
Nolan because he is not only a creative genius but he is also very in
tune with what we are trying to do
with sound. He loves sound and understands the importance of it. It’s
fun to work on a show where the
showrunners put a huge importance
on making a great soundtrack.
SW: Over the last decade, the technol-
ogy that we have to work with these
days makes it possible to do compli-
cated shows like this in the amount
of time that we have. It wasn’t that
long ago that we were working with
analog tape and analog mixing.
The evolution of technology, with
Pro Tools increasing the amount of
voices and tracks that you can have
in a single session, and being able
to automate all of the parameters for
reverb and levels, has really allowed
for this. Editorial wise, we can work
with hundreds of tracks. The editors
can take tracks from an old show
and bring them into a new show. It’s
kind of amazing what we are able
to accomplish these days. Jonah has
big, creative ideas and with the tools
that we have, we can help him realize his vision. The creative process
is really helped along by these tools.
We can do things now that even a
short while ago weren’t possible, or
weren’t possible to do as easily as
they are now. I appreciate the tools
that we have these days that allow
us to do the work that we’re doing.
